As much as I love music, Christmas music can get old. The same songs over and over, year after year. I love the classic stuff. The beautiful dramatic vibrato of those old crooners, the small choirs filling up the background, and the same lyrics you can memorize. But I can only take a little at a time. However, I wanted to share a few different songs and versions of the classics that actually don’t get old to me. There are only a few songs, but during this time of year, while you’re decorating and baking, having a few new songs to throw into the mix can’t be a bad thing!
1 // Album: This Warm December, Song: Rudolf the Red-nose Reindeer, Artist: Jack Johnson. I can’t explain how wonderful this song is. It’s totally the same as the old familiar tune … until the end. It has a happy and awesome message that makes so much more sense than the original.
2 // Album: Honky Tonk Christmas, Song: The Angels Cried, Artist: Alan Jackson + Alison Krauss. Although I love this entire album, minus the song with the Chipmunks, [Yes, seriously.], The Angels Cried is one of the most beautiful Christmas songs. The mixture of Alan’s simple country twang and Alison’s pure tone cuts straight to the soul.
3// Album: Peace Came Down, Song: ALL OF THEM, Artist: David Spencer and Scott Cash. When this album came out, I bought it because I loved Scott Cash’s band, Starting Tuesday. The only song on which he sings lead on this album is O Holy Night – my personal favorite.
Well, I hope this shakes up your play list a little! What are your favorite, off the beaten path, Christmas songs?
