Well, I finally went to the doctor after a wedding season worth of foot pain. He diagnosing me with sesamoiditis, a word that basically means, “your toe hurts.” I don’t know what caused it because I actually qualify for all of the causes – high intensity repetitive workouts, wearing high heals, and boney feet. After a shot of cortisone, he sent me home with purple wrap and a bag of frozen peas. AND instructions to buy a pair of shoes that doesn’t bend. Shoes that I would usually consider UGLY.
Confession. I just bought a pair of “ugly shoes” for the sake of health.
I used to ride horses and Danskos were in style in the barn world. I’ve always wanted to buy a pair just for memory sake, but they’re not the most popular shoe in the world of fashion and style. But I am on a mission to make these things cute! And although I have a closet full of really cute shoes, I can’t wear any of them right now. My foot hasn’t healed or felt good in over 8 months, and this is just not ok for what I do. I’m on my feet for 8-12 hours on the average wedding day. And even on portrait shoots, I move around on my feet too much to justify wearing “unhealthy” shoes.
Before your roll your eyes, I was TOTALLY the girl who actually said, “I’d rather wear unsupportive shoes and have my feet hurt than wear ugly shoes and still have my feet hurt.” As a wedding photographer, no pair of shoes is going to protect you from sore feet. So, be cute with sore feet, right? My heart still agrees with this. My feet and brain [and my doctor] totally disagree. So, I’m starting a new campaign inside myself. Make Danskos Cool. We’ll see how this goes, but here is my attempt so far…

I’m so glad I work in academia, where Danskos are everywhere. There are some styles that are terrible, but the standard shoe that is their most popular style looks just fine to me.
I save my cute shoes for nights out when I won’t be walking on cobblestones, bricks, or grass. 🙂
I totally agree – beauty is pain right? Right?!?! But definitely better for your foot to heal!! Good luck rocking the shoes, and no worries. You’ll find a way to make them cute!!
You are so cute! I hope your toe feels better:)
I’m totally with you there Ali. I recently broke down and got a pair myself (dark red ones!). Between working in the service industry and shooting…whew…I wish I broke down a long time ago. You make those shoes look good! 🙂
YOU ARE GORGEOUS.
Mission accomplished, you made the shoes look cute! 🙂 Keep it up and you’ll make them fashionable!
My mom has these neat gray prismatic ones, but she’s not sold on them yet. She feels like, because they are so inflexible and hard, that they aren’t as comfortable as her Crocs. I wear Crocs flip flops most of the year because I broke my little toe a few years ago (and I think another time since) and it didn’t heal right and lots of closed shoes make it hurt. 🙁
Good luck in your quest to make Danskos cool! 🙂
You are so cute and you DEFINITELY make them cool…I kind of want some now. Had so much fun yesterday hanging out and shooting!
[…] A few weeks back my friend Ali sent me a text message that said “Idea: can we be blog shooting buddies?” And my immediate response was “Yes!!!”…Basically it means that whenever Ali or I need photos taken for a blog post, we can pick a time to meet up and shoot them really quick! Ali is the perfect match for me as far as having a blog buddy because we were already friends so I knew we’d get along, she lives in my area, and our shooting style is similar! It’s also really helpful to have her as an extra person to bounce blog post ideas off of! I’m so thankful for her and excited about the blog posts I’ll be able to generate with her help..And I’m also so excited to get to help her too! I’ll be posting a review of my new Kelly Moore Bag soon that will include pictures that she took of me holding it, and Ali posted about her new shoes using the pictures I shot here! […]

HAH! I am/was totally the same kinda girl who was going to wear terrible shoes even though they killed my (I’m-still-in-my-twenties) feet. I was looking at how to style danskos because my friend recommended them to me for my pained toes. Thanks! Great photos btw.
Awhh someone found my blog through this post today…I think this shoot was when I decided I wanted to be your photog bff.

I think you’ve already made them look cute! I’m in the same boat with lots of foot, leg, and back pain after shooting weddings, and I just bought that same pair of ugly clogs. I hope I can pull them off as well as you did!
Oh man! You look super cute! I am a chef myself and have horrible feet, leg, knee, back and neck pain. In the kitchen I usually rock nikes or crocs, well I recently moved into front of house event planning so now I have to be cute right? My feet and back are KILLING me! Just as long days as the kitchen. I was thinking about finally breaking down and ordering some ugly dansko. And your photos have convince me you can totally be cute and comfy!! Please share, did you opt for plain black or go with some type of color?
