I had the best AP Physics teacher. He was funny, and made learning fun. He sometimes talked to us about the girl he was dating and slipped in some relationship advice. I still am thankful for this piece. When his girlfriend would say something that required no response, something like, “Gosh the sky is so pretty today,” he would say,
Girls are different than guys. [Obviously.] According to the internet, girls use 20,000 words in a day. Men use 7,000. This is probably where the initial problem comes in. Girls just say things to say them. We like to have opinions. We like to talk things out. And then we like something else: acknowledgement. I don’t know why, but I know that this is SO true for me. I say stuff like this all the time.
I’ve always wanted to go to London.
My skin is cooler, so warm reds don’t look good on me.
I think I’d like to color my hair.
I saw a dog on the side of the road.
I love that movie.
This is my favorite song.
I’m going to bring my jacket in case it rains.
I painted my nails today.
No really. All the time. Sometimes Chad just doesn’t know to respond because whatever I’ve said… doesn’t require a response! So, at the beginning of our marriage, I told him about my physics teacher. “All I need is a response to let me know that you’ve heard what I said.” Even something as simple as acknowledged.

I love this post! It’s so so true- I do that all the time. My poor husband isn’t as much of a talker as I am so I feel bad sometimes when I just keep on uttering words. I’m totally sharing this with him.
Oh how true this is!! This is me and my hubby to a T. I smiled the whole way through! Thank you for sharing!
This is wonderful!! Seriously such good advice for the guys. I hate that feeling when you say something, even as pointless as, “I’m going to make some tea” and you don’t hear a response. You wonder if they’re still listening. Thank you for sharing this!!
I am going make sure Daniel is aware of this! Thanks for the advice, I just talk to talk all of the time and he doesn’t know what to do!
YES!! When Jared or I feel like we need to know the other was at least listening, even if no response is necessary, we say, “Can I have some acknowledgement words please?” Haha! So the other will start saying, yeah, uh huh, youre right, thats true, etc… So funny!!
Haha, I love this 🙂 I do this aaaalllll the time, and just forwarded a link to this post to my boyfriend…hopefully this will help him out a little 🙂
This is so true Ali! I’m constantly telling my guy…”Could you PLEASE acknowledge what I said”, even if it is the silliest little thing. I guess sometimes there is just nothing to say to my rambling!
i LOVE this. just read this to brian and after finishing said, “okay, baby?” to which he responded “acknowledged.”
Lol! I loved reading this! It is SO TRUE! Oh men…
Oh wow… I clearly cannot count right now! You’re little spam simple math thing has made me retry three different times. Oh geezzz… maybe I need to go back to school!
Mr Wakefield?? Haha, he was so cool and funny. I loved his class.
…. I am pretty sure that Ali was telling girls to stop talking so much 🙂
i do this….. entirely too often. but it would be nice to be “acknowledged” sometimes! 😉
LOL. So true! BTW, Wakefield is on FB.
